Grain storage: the grain silo
What is a grain silo?
The silo facilitates the proper storage of grain (wheat, corn, barley, rapeseed, rye, soya...), as it complies with hygiene and safety regulations. Steel silos protect grain against bad weather, pests and diseases. Silos enable humidity and temperature to be controlled, preserving grain quality over a long period. Flat storage is more vulnerable to pest infestation.
In this way, the silo preserves, and even improves, the quality of stored grain to meet market demands and regulatory requirements.

Privé silos are cylindrical, as this is the optimum shape for distributing forces. Storage space is maximized at the top. Flat grain storage, on the other hand, requires more space, as the grains are distributed over a larger surface area.
Privé silos are made of galvanized steel to resist corrosion. With these materials, Privé silos are durable and inexpensive to maintain.
Silos are filled from the top using grain conveying equipment such as bucket elevators, augers and pulsed air.

Cylinders
- Galvanizing extends the service life of grain silos installed for livestock, feed mills, agricultural or industrial operations. The length of protection is proportional to the thickness of the zinc, so Privé SA uses Z600 steel (600 grams of zinc /m²), whereas many other manufacturers use Z275 to Z450 steel.
- Sheet metal punching is mainly carried out in a single press stroke on the cylinder production line, so grain cell hole centres are precise, making silo assembly easier.
- High-strength steels reduce the weight of the steel required, while complying with safety regulations.
- The proximity of Privé SA's steel suppliers, who are exclusively European, reduces the environmental impact of silo production.
- The corrugation of the 104×12 mm silo cylinder ensures excellent grain flow over the sheets, and limits grain and dust retention on the sheets. This reduces the risk of insect infestation. Deeper corrugations from other manufacturers (e.g. 76×18 mm) do not have this advantage.
- Privé bolts are hot-dip galvanized (40 to 100 microns of zinc), which extends the life of the silos. It takes 40,800 bolts to assemble a 17.77-meter-diameter grain silo with 20 shells!
- Privé Base® is a system for reinforcing the protection of the silo base with a 104 mm high plastic-coated steel ferrule.
- Privé Base® accommodates certain civil engineering imperfections and facilitates cleaning inside the grain silo.
- To facilitate construction of the silo's concrete slab, Privé SA offers a metal formwork system.

- Privé SA applies the wind and snow conditions of the construction site to dimension the roofs.
- Grain silo roofs are adapted to meet the snow and earthquake resistance requirements of your storage facility.
- The roof covering is made of Aluzinc® AZ185 or Magnelis® ZM310 steel, which extends the silo's service life. These coatings offer excellent corrosion resistance. You can also choose lacquered galvanized steel roofs (in various colors) for your silo.
- The silo's structure is made of Z purlins in S350GD+Z600 galvanized steel to EN10346.
- The roofs have ventable zones, to comply with ATEX (ATmosphères EXplosives) regulations.
- Central and lateral roof vents (0.10 m² cross-section) allow natural air circulation over the stored grain, reducing the risk of air condensation in the grain silo.

Galvanized steel walkways
- Silo walkways are made of C-beams, up to 6 meters long. The walkway is therefore rigid and can support a load of 200 kg/m² (NF E85-014 and NF EN ISO 14122-2, Part 2).
- Conveyor brackets are fixed every 1.5m to the C-beams, to secure grain conveyors up to 250kg/linear meter.
- Safeguards (94mm x 1.5m plates) are installed between the C-beams to secure the footbridge.
- The footbridge has a pedestrian walkway with galvanized gratings (30/19 mesh, 40 mm high), a guardrail and 2 railings.

How do you store and condition wheat to maintain its quality?
Grains are living organisms. Given the right environmental conditions, grains will naturally germinate to form a new plant. Stored grains form an ecosystem.
The quality of stored grain results from the grain itself and its environment.
Whatever the storage conditions, grains breathe in the presence of oxygen. Grain moisture content and temperature influence the intensity of respiration, which leads to a natural loss of mass.
To limit dry matter loss and prevent germination, the grain silo is the best solution. The grain silo can be fitted with thermometry instruments to optimize ventilation.
